Create your own hand printed fabric!
Design and print your own imagery on fabric for future projects or, bring a garment, table cloth, or other textile to embellish.

Students will learn how to design, cut, and print stencils on fabric. No drawing or design experience is necessary. Very simple repeated designs can be the most successful! We will begin with looking at samples for inspiration. Students will then learn how to transfer images to stencil material, and how to cut. We will experiment with different printing inks, tools, and printing techniques. One of the inks we will be printing with is very fast drying, enabling us to stitch on our printed fabric towards the end of the class.

A number of stitching techniques will be demonstrated. Combining printing with stitching adds texture and layering, and will result in a textile that is unique to you and your hand.

Teacher will provide:
• Printing inks
• Muslin fabric for printing and stitching experimentation
• Stencil brushes
• Stencil material
• Pearl cotton thread and embroidery thread
• Iron and ironing board

Students should bring:
• Scissors
• Exacto knife
• Cutting mat or piece of mat board (to protect table while cutting stencils)
• Fabric to print and stitch on: solid cotton or linen fabric - using repurposed fabric encouraged!
• Optional: garment, table cloth, or other textile item to print and stitch on
• Needles for stitching: embroidery or milliners needles work well - variety of sizes
• Pencil for taking notes and designing stencil
• Photos for inspiration (on iPhone or iPad is fine). Simple images with strong silhouettes work well: plants, flowers, simple geometric or biomorphic shapes.

Dye materials fall at our feet up here in the Foothills!
In this workshop we will go over basics of natural dyeing on
fabric, and students will get hands on experience dyeing
with local oak galls and acorns. Other possible local
materials will be discussed. We will also paint with soy
milk as a mordant, and iron water on the tannin rich dyed
fabric, to create patterns and designs.

Please wear comfortable work/studio clothes, bring an
apron, and rubber gloves (can be the thin medical kind, or
the more thick dishwashing kind).

Basic fabric will be provided for dyeing but bring any
fabric, yarn, or thread you might want to experiment with.
We will be working with small pieces of fabric (12 x 12
inches max).

Bring a pencil or pen and paper for note taking!
