Forest Aliya is a contemporary abstract landscape painter, muralist, and sound artist. Her education includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sacramento State University and a Masters of Fine Arts from the Pacific Northwest College of Arts in In Portland Oregon. Aliya’s work has exhibited in galleries in Capetown, South Africa, Portland, Oregon, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and Nevada City, California.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students engage in a series of skill building exercises, creating color and value grids and experimenting with glazing using Newton’s Color Wheel and the CMYK model for use and manipulation of color in simple compositions.
INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS…
NEWTON’S COLOR WHEEL
The Prism: yellow, yellow green, green, green blue, blue, indigo, violet, violet red, red, red orange, orange, orange yellow
CMYK MODEL
Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black
PAINTING COLOR GRIDS
1. Paint each color and create a value range of tints and shades
2. Mixing contrasting colors and create a value rang
CREATING SMALL PAINTINGS
Using the color grids as our guide we will paint small simple shaped paintings using different tints and shades of color to see how they interact with each other.
GLAZING USING CLEAR MEDIUMS
1. Learn how to mix glazes going form opaque to transparent.
2. Using our color grids and small paintings we experiment with our glazes to see how the color interacts with each other.
COURSE OVERVIEW
1. Build a better relationship with color.
2. Achieve an understanding how different shades of color interacts with each other intuitively and scientifically.
3. Understand the values of color.
4. Learn how to mix the color you want through combining opposite colors, tint, and shade.
5. Learn the temperament of pigments, if they are opaque or translucent.
MATERIALS LIST
Paper:
Thick watercolor paper. Could be any size from 4 x 6 or larger. We will be working small scale painting sketches.
Colors: (Please choose one paint medium: acrylic or gouache)
Ultramarine Blue, Purple, Medium Cadmium Yellow, White, Black (white should be a larger tube).
Choose one: Magenta or Quinacridone Red
Choose one: Cerulean Blue, Prussian Blue,or Manganese Blue
Choose one:Medium Cadmium Red or Naphthol Red
Paints can be purchased online at novacolorpaint.com - at wholesale prices. Allow at least 4 days for delivery.
Drawing Board 23”x26”
Brushes
A half inch or larger flat or filbert brush. You are welcome to bring your favorite brushes as well.
